French Lover
"The spotlight is bright, but love needs the dark."

Paris in the movies usually looks like it’s been put through a permanent Valencia filter, all gold-hour light and accordion music. But in French Lover, director Lisa-Nina Rives tries to show us two different versions of the City of Light: the one where the champagne never stops flowing, and the one where you’re just trying to make rent at a bistro. It’s a classic "world’s collide" setup that feels like a spiritual successor to Notting Hill, but updated for an era where everyone has a high-definition camera in their pocket and the "paparazzi" is just some kid with a TikTok account.
I watched this on a Tuesday afternoon while my neighbor was power-washing their driveway with the intensity of a man trying to erase a crime scene, and honestly, the contrast between the loud, mechanical drone outside and the breezy French charm on my screen made the movie feel like a much-needed vacation.
The Charm Offensive
The film hinges entirely on the broad, charismatic shoulders of Omar Sy. Playing Abel Camara, a jaded superstar who is bored with his own fame, Omar Sy could sell a glass of tap water to a drowning man with that smile. He has reached that level of international stardom—largely thanks to the Lupin effect on Netflix—where he just has to walk into a room to command it. But the real surprise here is Sara Giraudeau as Marion. She doesn’t play the "down-on-her-luck" waitress as a pathetic trope; she’s prickly, exhausted, and genuinely unimpressed by Abel’s celebrity status.
Their chemistry isn't the explosive, Hollywood kind; it’s more of a slow-burn simmer that relies on comedic timing. There’s a scene early on in a cramped kitchen where the spatial awareness of the actors is just perfect—Abel is too big for the room, both physically and metaphorically, and Marion keeps snapping him back down to earth. It’s the kind of physical comedy that doesn't need a punchline to work. Alban Ivanov also shows up as Sami, providing the frantic, high-energy comedic relief we’ve come to expect from him in films like C’est la vie! (2017). He plays the "best friend" role with a desperate edge that makes you wonder how Abel hasn't fired him yet.
Streaming in the Spotlight
Being a 2025 release, French Lover exists in that weird space where it feels designed for the "Global Top 10" list. It’s polished, it’s beautiful, and it’s undeniably "safe." While it hits all the beats of a traditional rom-com, it engages with our current cultural moment by looking at how exhausting it is to live under constant surveillance. There’s a plot point involving a leaked video that feels very "now," highlighting how a single misunderstood moment can be weaponized by the algorithm.
However, because it’s so polished, it sometimes loses that gritty French indie soul. Hugo Gélin, who co-wrote the script and produced it, has a history of making these "glossy-but-emotional" hits (like Love at Second Sight), and you can feel his DNA here. It’s the cinematic equivalent of a warm croissant—flaky, light, and gone in three bites. It’s delightful while you’re consuming it, even if it doesn't provide a ton of nutritional value for the soul.
The Obscurity Paradox
It’s interesting to think about why a movie starring one of the biggest actors in the world might already feel like a "hidden gem" or an obscure find for international audiences. In the streaming era, if a film isn't a massive franchise reboot or a horror viral sensation, it can easily get buried in the "New Releases" tab within forty-eight hours. French Lover is the kind of movie that thrives on word-of-mouth rather than a $100 million marketing budget.
Apparently, the production had to deal with significant challenges filming in the heart of Paris during a summer heatwave, which makes the fact that Omar Sy never looks sweaty even more impressive. There’s also a fun bit of meta-casting with Cindy Bruna, a real-world fashion icon, playing a version of that high-glamour world Abel is trying to escape. The film also features Benoît Crou as a sound engineer, which feels like a lovely nod to the behind-the-scenes crew who usually get ignored in these "movie about movies" stories.
The film's biggest flaw is probably its predictability. You know exactly where this train is going from the moment Abel walks into that bistro. But in a post-pandemic cinema landscape that often feels dominated by doom, gloom, or multiversal collapse, there is something deeply comforting about a movie that just wants two people to kiss before the credits roll. It’s a reminder that even in 2025, we’re still suckers for a well-shot stroll along the Seine.
French Lover doesn't reinvent the bicycle, but it’s a very pretty bicycle ride through a very pretty city. If you’re a fan of Omar Sy’s effortless magnetism or you just need 122 minutes of low-stakes romantic escapism, this is a perfect choice. It’s a charming, light-hearted look at the cost of fame and the value of a quiet cup of coffee with someone who actually sees you.
Stuff You Didn't Notice
Director's Debut: This marks Lisa-Nina Rives' major directorial step-up, and her eye for framing the intimacy of Paris streets suggests she’s a name to watch in the contemporary "glossy-realism" genre. The Gélin Connection: Producer/Writer Hugo Gélin and Omar Sy previously collaborated on the massive hit Two Is a Family (Demain tout commence), which explains the easy shorthand and warmth in Abel’s characterization. * The "Silent" Sound Guy: Keep an eye on Benoît Crou—the meta-commentary on the sound department is a recurring gag that rewards people who actually pay attention to the background noise.
